We are a resource in the community for affordable bicycles and repairs. A large part of our mission is providing access to transportation for people in need in exchange for some sweat equity. To do this we collect donated bicycles and repair them or part them out and recycle what is left. Community members can then buy a bicycle for a modest price, or earn one by working at the shop through an exchange of $10/hr credit towards the purchase of a bike. Most of the time, the most important skill needed is a desire to work and to learn.
The Chain Reaction bike shop also rents bicycle trailers and offers a large selection of used bicycle parts, tools and stands for people to work on their own bikes, and has knowledgeable staff ready to help.
What you should know about the Chain Reaction Bike Shop:
- Everything at the shop is donated and in used condition
- Bicycles and parts can be purchased or earned. Most bikes are $50 – $125. Most parts range from $5 – $20.
- Usually you can’t pay us to fix your bike. We prefer cooperative work arrangments where you participate in the process, whether it is working on our bikes, sweeping the floor, sorting tubes, helping us work on your bike, or trading in other bikes, parts, or tools, etc. Occasionally, we will do all the work for you and ask for a donation.
- Our staff are mostly volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer at the shop, please contact us.
